In a corner of the former Takasaki Castle site stands the Gunma Music Center, designed by Antonin Raymond in 1961. Its distinctive appearance features a glass-walled facade and exposed concrete sawtooth walls on the sides.
In November 1945, after the war, the Takasaki Civic Orchestra (predecessor of the Gunma Symphony Orchestra) was formed to help rebuild the city through music. Its founder, Boichiro Inoue, commissioned Raymond to design this building.
About 100 million yen of the construction costs was covered by citizen donations. Built with the understanding and cooperation of citizens, the Gunma Music Center is considered an ideal public building.
Ascending the beautiful curved spiral staircase reveals a grand panorama through the glass. The main hall smoothly connects the first and second floors, creating unity between the audience seats and stage.
Please feel the passion of Boichiro Inoue, Raymond, and the citizens of Takasaki.
