Observatory on the 21st floor of Takasaki City Hall

From the observation floor on the 21st floor of the City Hall, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city.

Takasaki City is a core city located in the southwestern part of Gunma Prefecture. To the northwest, you can see the Three Famous Mountains of Jōmō—Akagi, Haruna, and Myogi—while the southeastern area opens up to the Kantō Plain. The Tone, Karasu, and Usui Rivers flow through the city, connecting the Kantō Plain to the Pacific Ocean, making Takasaki an important transportation hub since ancient times.

During the Edo period, when Takasaki was a domain, it flourished as a post town along the Nakasendō and Mikuni Kaidō routes, with many travelers passing through. In the Meiji era, railways were constructed, and by the Shōwa period, the development of expressways and the Shinkansen network further established Takasaki as one of Japan’s leading transportation hubs.

Blessed with mountains and rivers, the region was also well-suited for sericulture and dyeing, and the city thrived as a commercial center with bustling silk and silkworm markets.

In addition to being Japan’s largest producer of daruma dolls, Takasaki is known as a “City of Music,” thanks to the activities of the Takasaki Civic Orchestra after World War II. The city is also vibrant in arts and cultural endeavors.
